Train on the Brain is one which we commissioned for ‘The View From Here’ strand. It’s from Alison Murray, a Canadian-born filmmaker. Channel 4 in the U.K. gave Alison money to do research on the phenomenon of young people riding the rails across Canada. Instead, she picked up a video camera, rode the rails for a few weeks, and shot the entire film herself.

What she discovered in her travels were young runaways, dreamers, and drifters, in the thrall of the freedom of the road. Train on the Brain is full of verve and daring. It reminds me of what it’s like to be young again, with a future that stretches out as far as the eye can see.
