MIPTV Picks 2008 – Our choices for must-see at the market

The non-fiction industry has become a very serious place. In the same way the Oscars recently celebrated a rather somber line-up of feature films, the realscreen MIP Picks report attracted an absolute dearth of light-hearted fare.

In fact, though we opened our servers to clips in six categories – factual entertainment; history; lifestyle; music, arts and culture; political, social and religious; and science and nature – lifestyle submissions were so few and far between that we were forced to include that genre under the factual entertainment header. C’mon people, is life so bad that we can no longer swap wives and celebrate the occasional kitchen makeover?

Kidding aside, media has always reflected the tone of the day, and it doesn’t bear repeating that we find ourselves in trying times.

What follows is a line-up of what our judges felt were the best of just under 200 submissions. It’s obvious that, regardless of the disposition of the times, good filmmakers find new and inspired ways to make stories that are much more immediate.

Though realscreen has featured its MIP Picks for several years now, this time around we added an extra incentive: a prize for the clip the judges considered to be Best in Show. So, for MIPTV 2008, realscreen is proud to award two passes to the 2009 Realscreen Summit to LMNO Productions for its film Marathon Love.
