When Ben Silverman took leave of his own company, Reveille, to become co-chairman of NBC Entertainment (really, let’s be honest, to help save the flagging network…), yet kept Reveille’s first-look deal with the US net in place, many saw the marriage as awkward, to say the least. But that arrangement became less cloudy in February with Reveille’s sale to Elizabeth Murdock’s Shine Group. The transaction saw the US prodco and its assets – including series such as Ugly Betty, The Tudors and reality hits The Biggest Loser and American Gladiators – sold to the UK conglom for $125 million. (Though The New York Times suggests the sale price could rise to as high as $200 million, depending on the success of shows in production.) As the new proprietors of Reveille, Shine will continue to enjoy the rest of the term of the first-look deal Silverman negotiated with NBC. The acquisition offers Shine a domestic distribution arm in the US (Shine Reveille), and also a shot in the arm with some weighty titles.
