Leaving work behind for the holidays

Since it's about time to leave the office for a week or two, we decided to ask Alex Baskin, head of development for Evolution Media (Real Housewives of Orange County), for some advice on how best to prepare to wrench yourself away from the office.

Since it’s about time to leave the office for a week or two, we decided to ask Alex Baskin, head of development for Evolution Media (Real Housewives of Orange County), for some advice on how best to prepare to wrench yourself away from the office.

1. Clean your desk! You’ll be happy you did when you get back.

2. Give yourself a thorough ‘paper trail’ (or detailed account and explanation) of work you need to do when you return. While you might think you’ll remember all of the minutia; if you actually take a vacation (and you should!), then you won’t have an instant, or complete, recall of everything.

3. Really leave work behind. This isn’t easy, but if you’re going to clear your brain, then do it! That means not checking your e-mail, voicemail, etc.

4. Keep your schedule on the lighter side when you return. Give yourself a few days to pick up on leftover tasks – and to build your stamina back to its fullest. Soon enough, you’ll be back in full gear.

And speaking of the holidays, the realscreen team will be out of the office from December 25, 2008 until January 5, 2009. Look for our last newsletter of the year on the 24th. It will resume publication again on January 5th. Have a happy holiday, everyone.
