Once again, realscreen and Reed MIDEM, organizers of the prestigious MIPDOC conference in Cannes, France, are presenting the MIPDOC Co-Production Challenge on Saturday, March 28. It’s an opportunity for five producers to pitch to a panel of broadcasters, with the best pitch taking home a prize package that includes passes to next year’s Realscreen Summit and MIPDOC. This year’s five finalists are:
Marianna Kaat, Baltic Film Production, Prodigy Between the Notes, Estonia
Jed Rothstein, Allyson Luchak, Moxie Firecracker Films/Bonne Pioche, Heavy Metal Islam, USA/France
David Hooper, Espresso TV, 1066 The Secrets of the Bayeux Tapestry, UK

This year’s jury of broadcasters is chaired by Maryanne Culpepper, Executive Vice President, Editorial and New Business Development, National Geographic Television.
‘It is an honor to chair the MIPDOC Co-production Challenge this year,’ says Culpepper. ‘I have spent much of my professional life creating stories for television, so I will be especially looking for compelling story-telling in the projects that are pitched to the panel. I hope we see a fascinating selection of innovative new documentary subjects, as well as innovative new approaches to popular topics.’
The jury consists of:
Caroline Behar, Head of Acquisition & International Co-productions, France 5
Takahiro Hamano, Senior Producer, International Co-productions NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation)
Tabitha Jackson, Editor, More4, Channel 4 Television
Michele Schofield, Director, Content – Program Acquisitions & Production, AETN All Asia Networks Pte Ltd
Also during the Challenge, there will be a special interview segment moderated by realscreen editor Barry Walsh, featuring producers who’d pitched projects in past editions of the Challenge. Panelists will include Charlotte Uzu, International Development Manager, Les films d’Ici (Waltz with Bashir); Daniel Cross, Producer / Director, EyeSteelFilm (Taqwacore) and Soniya Kirpalani, Director/ Producer, Sprocket Science (Threads of Tradition).
