Two new reality series are on tap for CBC’s fall schedule: Battle of the Blades and Canada’s Super Speller, from John Brunton’s Insight Productions (Canadian Idol, The Jon Dore Television Show) and Halifax Film (The Guard, Poko) respectively.

The series are looking to build on the pubcaster’s recent good luck with reality. Canada’s Super Speller will pit 12 youngsters against each other in an elimination/game show spelling bee. It will be hosted by CBC broadcaster and journalist Evan Solomon, who signed on to the project when it took shape last fall under exec producer and former CBC kids exec Cheryl Hassen

Meanwhile, top figure skaters will be teamed with hockey stars to compete against each other in weekly pairs figure skating performances in Battle of the Blades. The Ceeb has had some success with reality shows including the Canadian version of Dragon’s Den and The Week The Women Went, which danced around the one-million mark during its second season, up from 777,000 (2+).
