The Becoming a Man series depicts the transition from youth to adulthood for males in various cultures, illustrating the trials and triumphs each boy finds in their respective journeys. This installment tells the story of Wario, a 12-year-old member of the Ethiopian Borana tribe. His journey to manhood will see him accompany his elders in search of ‘white gold,’ or salt. Cameras follow the tribe as they visit a salt-bearing volcano dubbed ‘the mouth of the devil,’ as well as ‘the singing wells,’ where salt laborers form a 30-foot chain as they descend into the wells singing to retrieve water for their travels. It’s a stunning look into the nomadic lives of the tribe, placing us squarely in the middle of the sweeping, seemingly endless deserts the Borana traverse.
