Canwest is launching its new 24/7 Global Reality Channel in July, which will feature the most popular reality shows and franchises from around the world. Among the series airing on the channel will be such reality staples as Survivor, Big Brother and The Apprentice UK. Other series confirmed for the channel include Project Runway Canada, X-Weighted, Fear Factor, Extreme Makeover Home Edition and Deal Or No Deal Canada. Canwest is using the channel as an extension of its Global broadcast brand, citing BBM Canada data stating that 20 million viewers tuned into reality programming in Canada last fall as part of the reasoning behind the launch of the new specialty channel. ‘Reality viewers have a voracious appetite for this type of programming and we are pleased to give them a place to discover new shows, relive their favourite moments, or enjoy earlier seasons of hit shows for the first time,’ said Barbara Williams, executive vice president of content, Canwest Broadcasting. Global Reality Channel will be available as part of the Rogers VIP digital programming package, and Canwest says it is currently in discussions with other television providers, with further distribution announcements coming in the weeks ahead.
