Babelgum and Native Voice Films have announced a commissioning deal where the digital platform network will premiere a specially commissioned prequel for The Bengali Detective, ahead of its traditional media debut. Native Voice Films, which produced C4′s We Are the Indians documentary, has produced prequel episodes beginning on July 12 which aim to highlight the cast of the real-life characters of The Bengali Detective documentary. Directed and produced by Phil Cox and Giovanna Stopponi and coproduced with Annie Sundberg from Break Thru Films (Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work; The Devil Came on Horseback), episodes will roll out weekly through the fall festival season and will also be used to virally promote the feature film festival appearances and theatrical release of the doc in 2011. The multi-platform project is a coproduction between Babelgum, the Channel 4 British Documentary Foundation, DR2 Denmark, the Commonwealth Broadcasting Trust and Salty Sea Music. The series is currently in production.
