Cable channel OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network has selected festival favorite Becoming Chaz to be the launch film for its Documentary Film Club strand, which kicks off in May.

The doc will get its world premiere on OWN on May 10 at 8 p.m. EST. Immediately following the film, actor Rosie O’Donnell will host an hour-long special event from 10 p.m., in which she will talk with Chaz, his girlfriend Jennifer Elia, the filmmakers and other transgender people and their families.

Becoming Chaz is directed and produced by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato, in association with their production company World of Wonder.

The doc profiles the only child of musical duo Sonny & Cher, born Chastity Bono, as he struggles with gender identity and eventually decides to undergo gender reassignment surgery to become a man.

It premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and is being distributed internationally by Passion. Check out the trailer here.
