French indie producer and distributor Zed has pre-sold new documentary Facing the Giant Bees into Canada, Russia, the UK and a number of other territories.

The 52 minute HD documentary is directed by Jerome Ségur (Becoming a Man in Melanesia) and it looks at honey hunters in Nepal who put their lives in danger to access the precious liquid. Facing the Giant Bees is produced by Zed for France 5 and Germany’s SWR.

The documentary has been pre-sold to Oasis HD (Canada), GA&A (Italy), TV5 Monde (France), YLE (Finland), RTP (Portugal), Chunghwa Telecom (Taiwan), Channel One (Russia), TV Catalunya (Spain), MAC TV (UK), Al Jazeera (Middle East) and Canal Futura (Brazil).

The release date for the film is fall 2011 and it will be shot over one year with a €400,000  (US$579,000) budget. Zed says the doc fits in with the company’s objective of “beautiful human stories in nature.”

The news comes after Zed secured a number of coproduction partners for Looking for Nicolas Sarkozy (1 x 52- or 90-minutes) – a doc examining the reign of the titular French president – at MIPDoc in Cannes, as previously reported.
