Los Angeles-based distribution company 7th Art Releasing has picked up the North American distribution rights and world television rights to Britta Wauer’s In Heaven, Underground: The Jewish Cemetery in Berlin-Weissensee.

The doc made its world premiere this year at Berlin International Film Festival and won the Panorama Audience Award, and is now screening at Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival.

In Heaven, Underground tells the history of the oldest Jewish cemetery still in use in Europe, which was one of the few institutions to remain in Jewish hands during the Nazi regime. The portrait of the cemetery includes characters from around the world, including mourners, tourists and a third-generation gravedigger.

7th Art plans to continue the film’s run on the festival circuit before a winter theatrical release later this year.
