Pop Monkey popping into the UK

L.A.-based production company Pop Monkey Productions will open a UK office to manage its expanding slate of development in the UK and Europe.

L.A.-based production company Pop Monkey Productions (VH1′s Pop Monkey) will open a UK office to manage its expanding slate of development in the UK and Europe.

With an initial base at the Advision TV Studios in Kent, Pop Monkey will fund a number of unscripted and multi-platform pilots every year using its broadcast studio facilities.

Heading up the UK office are Chuck Thomas and Simone Thorogood, co-founders and development execs,  while Pop Monkey president Syd Vinnedge and VP business development Hugh Wright will oversee the L.A. headquarters.

In other news, Pop Monkey recently closed format deals with Sony Pictures Television in the U.S., TF1 Productions in France, Absolutely Independent in the Netherlands and Germany’s ohm:tv. The company has also just signed a joint venture with Miditech in India, the local producer behind Indian Idol and Survivor.

The prodco has also acquired the UK and U.S. rights to Guerilla Grill (RTL Klub, Hungary), Catch 21 (GSN, U.S) and In The Dark, which has aired in more than 20 countries.

“With this move we intend to leverage global success to get better deals with U.S. networks,” said Thomas. “Our goal is to pitch new formats to broadcasters in Europe first in a bid to retain ownership outside the U.S. and bring them back when they’re hits.”
