BBC Worldwide Germany has sold a package of nearly 70 hours of factual programming to Spiegel TV Wissen, the new joint venture German channel which launched this week.

The pay-TV channel, which launched on October 1, is the second network launched by Beta Film-owned indie Autentic and Spiegel TV, the network division of the bestselling German newsmagazine.

Among the titles included in the deal are 18 episodes from the BBC’s Horizon strand, including What is Reality?, The Secret World of Pain and What Happened Before the Big Bang?

Spiegel TV Wissen will also air a further 13 titles, including Arctic with Bruce Parry (5 x 50 minutes), Life In The Canopy (3 x 50 minutes) and Inside the Human Body (4 x 50 minutes).

Talking to realscreen at MIPCOM in Cannes, BBCWW Germany MD Isabelle Helle said the launch of another new digital channel in the region was good news for her company.

“With channels like ZDF Neo and Bon Gusto, and now Spiegel TV Wissen, it has really opened up recently,” she said. “There are so many opportunities for us to place our programming.”
