AFI Fest honors David Gelb’s “Jiro Dreams of Sushi”

AFI Fest 2011 has revealed its recipients of the Audience and Jury Awards, which include a win for the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi (pictured).

AFI Fest 2011 has revealed its recipients of the Audience and Jury Awards, which include a win for the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi.

The documentary, by filmmaker David Gelb, sees the Michelin-crowned sushi master Jiro Ono at work over the course of a year, and tied with feature film Kinyarwanda for the audience award in the World Cinema Section.

Elsewhere, the Hollywood-set festival’s jury section of short films gave an honorable mention to Penny Lane’s doc The Voyagers, in the animated short film section.

Lane’s 16-minute doc focuses on the 1977 NASA missions of for its skillful juxtaposition of archival footage and personal narrative to tell a moving story of exploration, romance and space travel.”

In related news, David Redmond and Ashley Sabin’s Girl Model, a documentary on the exploitation of teenage Russian girls for the Japanese modeling industry, earlier this month picked up the the Marc’Aurelio Award for best documentary at the Rome Film Festival, as well as the EnelCuore Award, which guarantees it Italian home video distribution.
