Shine USA has hired Australian TV executive Paul Franklin to the newly-created position of EVP, programming. He will relocate from Shine Australia to the News Corp-owned company’s Los Angeles office and have creative oversight of its unscripted format slate, which includes The Biggest Loser, MasterChef and Tabatha Takes Over.

Franklin began his career in the United Kingdom before moving to Sydney to oversee the first season of The Biggest Loser and Jamie’s Kitchen Australia. He later joined FremantleMedia Australia as head of factual entertainment and partnered with Shine UK to bring its cooking competition format MasterChef to Australia. After leaving Fremantle, he consulted for Shine Group and established MasterChef in the United States with chef Gordon Ramsay and managed launches of the format in France and India.

At Shine Australia, he oversaw unscripted series such as The Biggest Loser, Junior MasterChef, The Renovators, In Their Footsteps and the fourth season of MasterChef Australia.

His move follows last year’s appointment of Shine Australia and New Zealand co-CEO Carl Fennessy as Shine USA CEO and former Shine Group creative chief Paula Warwick’s promotion to head of international productions for Shine Network, announced this week.
