Jane Mote joins short film platform The Smalls

The former managing director of Current TV in the United Kingdom has joined a new short film platform that connects new directors with commercial opportunities.
Jane Mote will serve as a non-executive director of The Smalls, billed as “a cross between Vimeo and LinkedIn” that branding agency Devilfish launched as a showcase for short films. Following new investment, the website is undergoing an overhaul and will relaunch in May.
“The expansion of The Smalls is especially good timing as the closure of Current UK has left a gap for new filmmakers wanting a foothold in the professional film and TV world,” Mote said.
The Smalls, which launched in 2006, features tools and applications for directors to collaborate and connect with brands and organizations to help gain exposure for their projects. For example, the site is hosting a contest with documentary short film festival This London with Boat Magazine and Guardian Travel in the UK. It also held events in partnership with brands such as Apple, Virgin Media, Nokia, Comedy Central and Panavision.
Mote was previously director of factual, lifestyle and multi-platform at UKTV before she left to join Current TV in the UK, the Al Gore-backed cabsat broadcaster that closed on March 11 after BSkyB withdrew core funding of the channel. Prior to UKTV, she was controller at Community Channel and executive director at BBC London.
