Anna Gecan sparks up new company

The former HGTV exec is launching Global Spark Media, a venture that will develop and produce Canadian factual and lifestyle content for the U.S. and UK.

Former HGTV exec Anna Gecan is launching Global Spark Media, a venture that will develop and produce Canadian factual and lifestyle content for the U.S. and UK.

Gecan, formerly a vice president of content and scheduling for HGTV Canada and subsequently a vice president of original programming for HGTV U.S., aims to pair foreign broadcasters with Canadian production partners, in order to help broadcasters reduce costs while allowing them to retain exclusive rights in their territories.

“Many U.S. and UK broadcasters have had great success in acquiring Canadian factual content, but few have adopted our model that allows for creative input and production in their territory at a fraction of the typical episode cost,” Gecan said in a statement.

According to the company, it is already working on its first cross-border project, teaming up Toronto’s Big Coat Productions with Discovery Communications’ TLC.

Global Spark Media is headquartered in New York with offices in Toronto.
