Banijay Productions France is set to produce a version of Popstars for digital network D8, making a return to France for the format, which last aired on M6 in 2007.
Set to launch this year, the primetime series commission will return to the original format of the show, where a group of singers is formed. The re-launched version of Popstars will focus on the contestants’ personalities, relationships and their quest to become pop stars.
Banijay Group took a majority share in Screentime, the Popstars format creator, last year.
“When we took a majority stake in Screentime towards the end of 2012 we knew that Popstars was ready for a revival in the territories where Banijay Group is present, and beyond,” said Francois de Brugada, EVP of the Banijay Group. “I’m thrilled that just a few months later the format has been sold locally by another Banijay company.”
“Popstars is one of the original and best-loved talent quest reality shows ever to appear on television,” added Xavier Gandon, program director of D8. “It has already launched the careers of several hugely popular recording artists in France, and we are proud and excited to be bringing it to a new generation of French fans.”
