UK net BBC3 has commissioned a fast turnaround, current affairs special on athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius, who won two gold medals and a silver medal at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. The case continues.
The as-yet-untitled hour-long doc is being made by Mentorn Media, and was commissioned by the BBC’s Fiona Campbell. The exec producer for Mentorn is Steve Anderson, the producer/director is Nick London, and the associate producer is Shekhar Bhatia.
The presenter is Rick Edwards, who recently made his debut fronting BBC3′s Free Speech, and who presented Paralympics coverage for UK net Channel 4.
Mentorn recently made BBC3′s fast turnaround special Superstorm Sandy: Caught on Camera, and was also in South Africa to make Dispatches: Murder on Honeymoon, which looked at the case of Anni Dewani.
BBC3 controller Zai Bennett said: “BBC3 is never afraid to tackle current affairs and we are committed to showing bold, thought-provoking programs for 16-34s.
“Mentorn will be producing this program at incredible speed, and together with presenter Rick Edwards, I’m sure they will deliver a documentary that will bring a new angle to this ever developing news story.”
Anderson added: “The story of Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp has captured everyone’s attention. It is hugely important and Mentorn has the expertise to deliver it quickly to BBC3.”
The program will be pre-sold by Passion Distribution.
