GA&A Productions has hired Bettina Hatami (pictured) as its creative director, as the Rome-based company looks to expand both domestically and internationally.

Previously an indie producer and a commissioning editor for Discovery Channel Europe, Hatami will head up GA&A’s production and development team.

She served as creative director at Doclab in Italy, where she produced Inside Costa Concordia Voices of Disaster for National Geographic International. At Discovery Channel Europe, meanwhile, she commissioned doc mini-series Reporters at War and The Age of Terror: A Survey of Modern Terrorism.

At GA&A, Hatami and her new team are at work on a special about Pope Benedict XVI for Italian channel La7, called The Pope and I.

“We are really excited to combine forces with Bettina,” said GA&A president Gioia Avvantaggiato. “Her background is also unique because she has an international track record on both sides of the desk. She brings an international ambition and savoir-faire to production and the output that she will helm will not only grow our production but also our distribution.”

“This is an exhilarating time in Italy with the growth of cable, digital channels and VoD, which complement the possibilities offered by terrestrial channels here,” said Hatami. “But what I am also looking forward to is exploring all the options offered by the market today. From adapting international formats locally to making a local story international. And there is no shortage of great stories right on our doorstep.”
