Asian joint venture Ideate Media has tapped Off the Fence (OTF) to be its factual content partner, in a deal that will see the Dutch-headquartered indie overseeing a US$21 million non-fiction production slate.
The deal with Ideate – which has been set up to create, develop and monetize TV and film content internationally – is for an intended production slate of 12 series, which will be coproduced by OTF Productions and Ideate Media over the next three years.
Ideate is an Asian joint venture between Astro Overseas and Khazanah Nasional, the investment holdings arm of the Government of Malaysia.
In addition to producing original non-fiction content, OTF will also curate pitches from third party factual prodcos, for titles to be produced with Ideate funding. OTF Distribution will handle the international sales of all content coproduced as part of the venture.
OTF founder and owner Ellen Windemuth told realscreen: “The initial slate has been agreed to be $21m of production, but that is scalable according to the quality of the project and the partners.”
As part of the deal, OTF will be collaborating with Ideate Media and governmental organizations to provide training to the production communities in Malaysia and the region via a program of workshops and masterclasses. The training will cover a number of areas, from production and sales through to rights and business affairs.
“This entire Ideate venture has a big skills transfer element, and is basically meant to bring a deepening of the training into Southeast Asia, of the discipline of commercial English non-fiction programming, with a plan for it to be distributed further than just the Asian market,” Windemuth explained.
She added that the production companies and the partners will all jointly own the programming created under the venture.
Ideate Media CEO Zainir Aminullah added that, in addition to factual content, Ideate will also create kids, drama and feature film content, with unscripted accounting for about 20% of the slate and spend.
