The 2014 Realscreen Awards, to be held on June 4 as part of Realscreen West in Santa Monica, has opened its call for entries.
Making its first appearance in 2010 as the realscreen Factual Entertainment Awards, the ceremony has quickly gained a name for itself by being the first awards program to recognize the best work made in the myriad sub-genres of unscripted entertainment from around the world.
For last year’s ceremony, the non-fiction categories for the awards were revamped, in order to make them more inclusive of the wide range of non-fiction television programming covered year-round by realscreen and realscreen.com. For the upcoming awards ceremony, a new sub-category has been added in the unscripted category of competition. “Shiny floor” game shows. defined by awards organizers as “in-studio game show formats that utilize challenges and/or tests of skill and/or knowledge as part of the game play,” will now be recognized within their own sub-category.
Non-fiction categories added last year include arts & culture, environmental/natural history, history/biographical, science & technology, and social issues/current affairs.
The awards celebration will also encompass factual/non-fiction digital and branded content, with categories for best brand-funded project, best multi-platform project and best web series/programs also part of the mix, in addition to several categories devoted to the various sub-genres of unscripted programming.
The submission process for the 2014 Realscreen Awards is now open. Entrants have until Friday, February 7, 2014 to submit programming made between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013.
For last year’s ceremony, Amazing Race executive producer and co-creator Bertram van Munster was inducted into the Realscreen Awards Hall of Fame.
