El Rey taps Gurney, Vice for specials

Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network has commissioned a series of specials exploring youth subcultures, to be made by Vice Media and Duck Dynasty indie Gurney Productions.

The hour-long programs will examine hidden America’s movements and subcultures, with Vice’s Mexico division leading series development while collaborating with the brand’s U.S. team.

“From their distinctive style to their storytelling sensibility, Scott and Deirdre [Gurney] are the perfect match for El Rey Network,” said Robert Rodriguez, founder and chairman of El Rey Network, in a statement. “This show will generate a dialogue and create exposure for subcultures that have yet to be explored by mainstream media.”

Gurney Productions co-founder Scott Gurney added: “We hope that as we begin to pull back the curtain, viewers will become fascinated, as we were, with the compelling subjects that we explore. As storytellers, we couldn’t have more engaging and better material than what is in our own backyard.”
