Discovery Channel ups Michael Sorensen

Discovery Channel has promoted Michael Sorensen (pictured) to vice president of development and production.

Formerly senior director of development, he will develop new series and specials, supervise production on current series and identify writing, producing and on-camera talent for new programming. He reports to the U.S. cable network’s exec VP of development and production Dolores Gavin.

Sorensen’s development credits include Skywire Live with Nik Wallenda, Bering Sea Gold: Under the Ice and Yukon Men. He also served as executive producer on upcoming programs Survival Live and The West and oversaw Discovery Channel’s slate of ‘Shark Week’ programming in 2013.

Prior to joining Discovery, he was the senior director of program development for sister net Science Channel where he worked on series such as Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman, Dark Matters and Oddities. He also worked in the alternative television division at Creative Artists Agency.
