Banff to honor A+E, MIPCOM 2015 to spotlight Turkey

The Banff World Media Festival has named A+E Networks as the recipient of its Company of Distinction honor, while the Turkish television industry will be showcased as the Country of Honor at MIPCOM 2015.

The Banff World Media Festival has named global media company A+E Networks as the recipient of its Company of Distinction honor, and will feature the group’s executives and talent throughout the June event.

The news comes as MIPCOM organizer Reed Midem has announced that the Turkish television industry will be showcased as the Country of Honor at MIPCOM 2015.

Banff’s Company of Distinction program celebrates leaders in screen-based entertainment and runs throughout the festival, which will next take place from June 7-10, 2015. Introduced two years ago, the inaugural recipient was CBS Corporation, while Lionsgate Entertainment picked up the award this past June.

The 30-year-old A+E Networks began as two cable channels in 1984 and now has a portfolio of brands including A&E, History, Lifetime, H2 and FYI, as well as such series as Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, Dance Moms and Duck Dynasty.

“A+E Networks undoubtedly deserves the honor of Company of Distinction,” said Barb Williams, president of Shaw Media and chair of the festival’s board of directors. “Its inventiveness has led to a visionary global media approach and we are thrilled not only to celebrate its triumphs, but to benefit from its extensive industry experience.”

Sean Cohan, executive VP of international for A+E, added: “We are very excited to be presented with this wonderful honor at Banff. As one of the world’s leading television and digital media content events, Banff’s entrepreneurial values align very closely with A+E Networks’, and we are thrilled to have our executives and talent attend this year’s festival to celebrate how far we have come.”

As for MIPCOM’s selection for next year, Turkey is primarily known for its dramatic productions, but has also been the source of a number of formats in recent years. As Country of Honor, the market will feature a series of conferences from the Turkish industry, as well as screening showcases for its latest programs and networking events.

“The Turkish television industry ranks as the second-fastest growing in the world,” said Dursun Topçu, VP of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, in a statement. “As the Country of Honor, we would like to share this dynamism at MIPCOM 2015, which provides a global showcase for Turkey to advertise its treasures to the world.”
