Golden Globe winner Idris Elba races for Discovery UK

Golden Globe-winner and Emmy nominated actor Idris Elba (pictured)is getting behind the wheel for a 4 x 60-minute series for Discovery Channel UK.

The Idris Elba Project (working title) is being coproduced by Shine North and Elba’s own Green Door Pictures, and will find The Wire and Luther star participating in rally driving, street racing, aerobatics and power boating in competitions located in the British Isles, Florida and California.

In pursuit of his goals, Elba will join professional teams, take on challenges, receiving coaching and race against the pros to illuminate not only the discipline of racing, but its engineering, science and history.

“I’m taking on the toughest racing challenges of my life for this new Discovery TV series,” Elba said in a statement. “Along the way I’ll meet extraordinary individuals, spectacular machines and hear amazing stories of how far people go to satisfy their love of speed. The extreme challenges will take me right out of my comfort zone as I compete against the best on land, water and in the air.”

Susanna Dinnage, exec VP and MD for Discovery Networks UK and Ireland, added: “This landmark series will take viewers on a journey with Idris to experience the adrenalin rush and thrill of speed, a passion for him and our audience. The series embodies Discovery Channel’s ‘Make Your World Bigger’ brand promise and will go behind the scenes to take viewers to the heart of Idris’s adventure.”

Commissioned by Discovery Networks International’s VP of factual production and development Elizabeth McIntyre, The Idris Elba Project is scheduled to air on Discovery in mid-2015 in more than 220 countries and territories, including the U.S.

Victoria Noble serves as executive producer for Discovery, while Rick Murray is exec producing for Shine North.
