Next Goal Wins, a documentary following the American Samoa soccer team as it attempts to overcome years of defeat and earn a place in the FIFA World Cup, snagged top doc honors at the British Independent Film Awards last night (December 7).

The doc, directed by Steve Jamison and Mike Brett, beat out competitors including Virunga, Night Will Fall, The Possibilities Are Endless and 20,000 Days on Earth.

The latter film didn’t come away empty handed, however, as the hybrid ob-doc/drama featuring musician Nick Cave earned its directors, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, the nod for best debut director.
