U.S. broadcaster NBC has ordered an eight-episode ob-doc series exec produced by Ellen DeGeneres and Shed Media that accompanies couples on first dates.

The 8 x 60-minute series – which is slated to begin production in Chicago in July – is based on the titular format for UK broadcaster Channel 4, and is billed as an “authentic look at a variety of real first dates happening over one night at the same restaurant.”

The audience will have the opportunity to judge how well a couple is interacting, and whether they are a good fit. A premiere date for First Dates has yet to be set.

DeGeneres’ prodco A Very Good Production most recently teamed with A. Smith & Co. for HGTV furniture design series Ellen’s Design Challenge, which challenged six contestants to sketch, design and build creative furniture.

Executive producers on First Dates include Shed Media’s Pamela Healey and John Hesling as well as DeGeneres and Jeff Kleeman for A Very Good Production, and Tim Carter for Twenty Twenty. Anthony Dominici is also serving as executive producer.
