UK indie betty has hired Wall to Wall producer Duncan Coates (pictured) for the newly created role of director of programs.

Effective in May, Coates will oversee production for the London-based maker of The Undateables, Bear Grylls: Mission Survive and Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners.

He spent the past five years at Wall to Wall where he worked on factual titles such as Long Lost Family, The Gift and Wanted: A Family of My Own. Prior to that, he was a producer for Twenty Twenty Productions and RDF.

Coates’ appointment follows last month’s news that betty founder and CEO Liz Warner is departing this month. The CEO position will not be replaced and management – including Coates – will report to creative director Neil Smith.

The company, which was bought by Discovery four years ago, has also recently hired executive producers Eve Kay, Kathleen Larkin and Tom Sheahan.

Last month, betty inked a copro deal with Sydney-based prodco Lune Media to bring its formats to Australia and New Zealand.
