U.S. cable net Syfy has greenlit the game show Geeks Who Drink from executive producer Zachary Levi (pictured, right).
In addition to producing through his prodco The Nerd Machine, the Chuck and Heroes Reborn actor will host the weekly series. The show is based on a pub trivia contest of the same name, which is played by more than 25,000 people in more than 600 bars across 35 states according to the network.
Kinetic Content and Condé Nast Entertainment are coproducing and the series will premiere on the NBCUniversal-owned cable net on July 16.
Each week, two teams of three players – a celebrity captain and two self-proclaimed trivia geeks – compete in three rounds of rapid-fire quizzes covering topics that range from pop culture to science fiction. The winners receive a spot on the Geeks Who Drink leader board as well as a slew of geeky prizes.
“To be the executive producer and host of Geeks Who Drink is an exciting opportunity to broaden my experience on both sides of the camera,” Levi said in a statement. “Geeks Who Drink is such a fresh take on the game show genre, and something that we at The Nerd Machine believe will resonate with everyone who loves trivia and pop culture. We’re looking forward to collaborating with the teams at Syfy, Kinetic Content and Condé Nast Entertainment.”
Levi and Colemen started the company to produce content related to nerd culture. The shingle has a first-look deal with Universal TV to option and develop new properties.
