Female-focused digital portal espnW will launch an original five-part doc shorts series titled What Makes Us, featuring some of the world’s greatest female athletes.
Produced in collaboration with Nine for IX Short: Rowdy Ronda Rousey directors Rena Mundo Croshere (pictured, right) and Nadine Mundo (left), three of the five films will focus on the highs and lows of elite female soccer players, ahead of this June’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. Featured players include America’s Sydney Leroux and Megan Rapinoe, as well as Spain’s Verónica Boquete.
The three films – What Makes Us: Syd; What Makes Us: Pinoe and What Makes Us: Vero – will debut across espnW.com on May 29 and are to follow the respective athletes on their journeys to become icons in their sport.
The remaining two films will focus on the struggles and successes of world champion surfer Carrissa Moore in What Makes Us: Riss (August 3) and U.S. Olympic hockey star Hilary Knight in What Makes Us: Knighter (air date to be announced).
“What Makes Us is a series about heroes and underdogs, about struggle and triumph,” said co-director Rena Mundo Croshere in a statement. “We wanted to portray these amazing female athletes in an epic and cinematic way because we believe that how we depict women in media influences what women believe is possible for themselves.”
Each of the five doc shorts is to range in length from 12 to 16 minutes.
