BBCWW launches trio of channels in South Africa

BBC Brit, BBC Earth and BBC First will launch in South Africa, making the country the first in the world to carry all three of BBC Worldwide’s new global brands.

Factual entertainment channel BBC Brit and natural history channel BBC Earth will replace BBC Entertainment and BBC Knowledge on MultiChoice’s DStv platform as of September 1, and drama network BBC First will follow on October 18.

BBC Brit will offer the Karl Pilkington-hosted The Moaning of Life, among other titles, while BBC Earth’s programming will include David Attenborough meets President Obama, Life Story (pictured), Human Universe and Life Below Zero.

“The content hosted on these channels is designed to reach a diverse pan-African audience, reflecting a wide range of voices, ages and cultures,” said BBC Worldwide GM and VP for Africa Joel Churcher in a statement.

The South African launch marks the debut of the brands in Africa and follows the debuts of BBC Brit and BBC Earth in Poland, the Nordics, Hungary, Romania and Turkey, and BBC Earth in Spain and Belgium. The latter channel will next launch in Latin America on September 1 and across Asia on October 3.

BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies and BBC World News are already available in South Africa.
