U.S. broadcaster ABC has set a September premiere for its hour-long competition special, #DanceBattle America.
Co-hosted by actor Alfonso Ribeiro and singer Jordin Sparks, the Magical Elves-produced special was inspired by a 2013 dance battle on social media between former Dancing with the Stars dancer Julianne Hough (pictured) and E! News host Maria Menounos, who are both exec producing the special.
According to ABC, the 2013 dance battle inspired celebrities including Kate Hudson, Kristi Yamaguchi and Amber Riley to also take part, and ultimately Hough and Menounos challenged Americans to submit their own dance moves through social media for a chance to participate in #DanceBattle America.
Eight teams have been chosen to participate in the LA-based Battle on September 14. The teams will go through a week of training with top American choreographers to create a routine around a chosen song, and then face off across four rounds of competition. Once the battle rounds are completed, the winning team will be selected by the studio audience.
“The number one question I get from fans is, ‘When are they going to make a Dancing With the Stars for the average Joe,’ so the idea behind this is that these families, friends and co-workers get to come to LA to work with a choreographer and go through a small version of the transformation that the celebrities go through on Dancing with the Stars,” said Hough in a statement.
#DanceBattle America will debut on September 14 at 10 p.m. EST, following the 21st season premiere of Dancing with the Stars.
Executive producers on #DanceBattle America include Magical Elves’ Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz along with James Sunderland, Hough and Menounos. Casey Kriley and Jo Sharon are also co-executive producers.
