Eureka Media-owned SVOD platform AeroCinema has appointed former Discovery Communications exec Peter McKelvy (pictured) as senior VP of business development.

The hire comes weeks after the aviation-focused online doc channel – headquartered in Toronto and expected to launch in March 2016 – announced that Clark Bunting, another long-time Discovery Communications exec, would join the company as executive chair of its board.

McKelvy previously served as VP of Discovery Studios and as senior VP of global music and footage, departing in 2012 after 22 years with the company. During his tenure at Discovery, McKelvy was to oversee all aspects of digital asset management, including strategic partnerships and digital content archiving. Most recently, he served as North American MD for Sweden’s Epidemic Sound, a stock music licensing company.

AeroCinema promises more than 400 rare aviation features, documentaries and profiles that aim to explore aviation from its inception to present day. The service’s content will focus on the stories behind the airplanes, pilots and manufacturers instrumental through WWI to modern aviation.

The SVOD service has “deep experience” in transferring historic film to digital and has further acquired technology to transfer footage to HD and 4K. The company previously transferred the 3,000-hour British Pathe news reel collection, in addition to other archives.

“Peter provides an incredible wealth of production and licensing expertise and joins us at an optimal time as we re-launch our archival transfer business,” said AeroCinema CEO Phil Osborn in a statement. “His background and network in stock footage provides the potential to expand that business beyond our own needs and transfer archives for third parties or rent stock videos.”
