Sheffield Doc/Fest, Just So partner on shorts platform

Sheffield Doc/Fest and London-based film agency Just So are teaming up to launch an online platform and film fund to support and showcase doc shorts.

Sheffield Doc/Fest and London-based film agency Just So are teaming up to launch an online platform and film fund to support short-form documentaries.

The Just So Film Fund will award 12 grants of up to £5,000 (US$7,500) to new and established filmmakers, and provide the shorts with an online home within the Postcards platform. Three of the docs will be greenlit during Sheffield Doc/Fest in June and the remainder will be commissioned over the course of the year based on online submissions.

Postcards will launch with six shorts: Five Stone of Lead, Aka Chan (pictured), Funabashi Dreams, Rocket Wars, Stopping Time and Soft Serve. The site aims to provide a dedicated online home for the shorts and is Just So’s second major online talent showcase in addition to the music platform Black Cab Sessions.

The deadline for the first round of submissions is January 31.

“Short documentaries are on the rise and we started Postcards to stoke the fires of the genre,” said Just So founder Jono Stevens in a statement. “In 1925 Grierson defined documentary as ‘creative treatment of actuality’ and we want to give filmmakers the opportunity to explore the limits of documentary and make films with as much focus on form as on content.”
