U.S. net Outside Television has added four original primetime series to its production slate.
Produced by Jalbert Productions in association with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, the 8 x 30-minute In Search of Speed (pictured) is to provide an intimate look at the men’s and women’s U.S. Alpine Team as they prepare for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championship in Vail and Beaver Creek, Colorado.
Akin to NFL Films’ Hard Knocks, the series is to shadow the training regimens of Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, Julia Mancuso and Ted Ligety.
The 13 x 30-minute Maverick Moments from Go Big Project, meanwhile, follows professional surfers across Hawaii’s North Shore to Portugal’s North Canyon as they attempt to ride swells that surpass 100 feet. The series will act as a companion piece to the 13 x 30-minute Liftoff, also produced by Go Big Project.
Liftoff will chronicle Base jump and wingsuit enthusiast Jokke Sommer and renowned big wave surfer Niccollo Porcella as they set out on a global journey to “teach one another their incomparable skills.” The pair will learn from professional instructors that include big wave surfers Nic Lamb, Anthony Tashnick and Garrett Mcnamara – who crested a record-holding 100-foot wave in Nazaré in January 2013 – and wingsuit pilots Ludo Woerth and Felix Lorentzen.
Based on last year’s titular mountain biking film, the 8 x 30-minute UnReal profiles the making of some of the film’s more memorable moments, including training horses to descend cliff-faces alongside extreme bikers, and how Canadian glaciers doubled as mountain biking trails. The series is produced by Anthill Films and Teton Gravity Research.
Elsewhere, the network has renewed candid interview series Outlook (pictured) and traveling athlete series Locals for season three, while popular newsmagazine Dispatches returns for a sixth round. All three are produced in-house by Outside Television Studios, which is currently producing other streaming initiatives, including a new project for retailing giant REI.
The network’s production push comes as such U.S. cable providers as Dish Network, Suddenlink and RCN add Outside to their respective line-ups.
