Former FIC exec launches podcast venture

Just days after exiting Fox International Channels, CEO Hernan Lopez (pictured) has launched an audio-on-demand network titled Wondery.

Inspired by the growth¬†of podcasts, the Fox-backed venture is to focus on creating and curating original, scripted and “real-life” programming.

“Wondery gives me the ability to combine many things I know and love – storytelling, network- and brand-building and technology – in the fastest growing segment of on-demand consumption,” said Lopez in a statement.

“Americans spend three-and-a-half hours a day with audio, and all that time is going in one direction: mobile, and on-demand,” the exec added. “Podcast consumption has grown more than 40% in just two years and is about to reach a tipping point. This is the perfect timing to capture this opportunity, using some of the best practices that have transformed television over the last 10¬†years.”

Wondery will be partnering with San Francisco-based technology company ART19, which provides distribution infrastructure to podcasts, networks and media companies. The company’s technology inserts advertising that targets listeners based on time, location and other demographics.

Lopez – who started his career in radio – exited FIC earlier this week after a restructure saw the dissolution of the banner, and the consolidation of Fox Networks Group’s global channels under regional hubs. Lopez became CEO of FIC in 2011.
