New York sales agent Cargo Film & Releasing has acquired the international distribution rights for the doc Under the Gun.

Directed by Stephanie Soechtig and exec produced by Yahoo News anchor Katie Couric, the film world premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is to make its international premiere at Hot Docs next month.

The doc looks at the spate of mass shootings in the U.S. in recent years and, more broadly, the country’s problems with gun violence using statistics, commentary and personal accounts from former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and parents from the Newtown massacre.

Lionsgate has the U.S. broadcast rights to Under the Gun and cable net EPIX has the U.S. TV rights.

The deal was negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers by producer Joshua Kunau and Cargo’s David Piperni.
