The Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding (pictured) will delve into the world of Japanese game shows for Channel 4.
The UK pubcaster has ordered Only In Japan (working title, 1 x 60 minutes) from Rumpus Media. The studio show will explore several aspects of Japanese pop culture such as news, advertising, products and inventions, placing a particular focus on game shows.
According to C4, Fielding will challenge two teams of “famous faces” to compete in challenge rounds from Japanese game shows to see if the formats successfully translate for UK audiences.
Tamsin Dodgson, Ian Wimbush and Emily Hudd are exec producing.
Meanwhile, Channel 4 has also picked up a series about extreme cake makers and an Irish travel show.
Hosted by Rufus Hound and produced by Twofour, the daytime series The Extreme Cake Makers looks at how elaborate specialty cakes are created. Andrew Mackenzie-Betty and Kitty Walshe are exec producing.
In Ardal’s Ireland (w/t, 3 x 60 minutes), comic actor Ardal O’Hanlon goes off the beaten path in Ireland by following Victorian guidebooks on small-town attractions. The series is being produced for Channel 4 Features by Northern Irish indie Big Mountain Productions, with Jane Kelly and Philip McGovern serving as EPs.
