U.S crime net Investigation Discovery is preparing a three-night investigative exploration into the unsolved murder of child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey on Monday (Sept. 12).
JonBenét: An American Murder Mystery profiles experts as they re-examine the evidence of the notorious cold cases in an attempt to challenge long-held beliefs and conspiracy theories at the center of this mystery. The series is produced by Weinstein Television, American Media Inc. and Jupiter Entertainment.
In December 1996, six-year-old JonBenét was found dead in her Boulder, Colorado home after she was reported missing by her parents. Her older brother, Burke, and parents, John and Patsy, became primary suspects in the high-profile case, but the family members were later cleared by DNA evidence.
The three-part true-crime series will utilize the latest technology, never-before-seen police interrogation tapes with Patsy and John Ramsey, unsealed documents and more than 500 family photos and videos to shed further light into the 20-year mystery.
Exclusive interviews featured in the crime series include those with Gordon Coombes, a former investigator for the Boulder County District Attorney’s office; investigative journalist Diane Dimond; former Colorado Springs detectives Bobby Brown and Steve Pease; private investigators Ollie Gray and John San Agustin; former Boulder Police sergeant Bob Whitson; and Pamela Griffin, who handmade all of JonBenét’s pageant costumes and personally knew the entire Ramsey family.
Additionally, the project will feature an exclusive interview with John Mark Karr, a former elementary school teacher who falsely confessed to the murder in August 2006.
In the exclusive clip shared with realscreen, forensic handwriting expert Cina Wong examines the killer’s ransom note, in which “disguised writing” is used, and compares it to various writing samples provided by John and Patsy Ramsey at the beginning of the investigation.
Executive producers on the series include Harvey Weinstein, Bob Weinstein, Patrick Reardon, Stephen Land, Allison Wallach, Matt Sprouse, David Pecker and Dylan Howard. ID’s Pamela Deutsch serves as senior executive producer.
The series will premiere across Investigation Discovery over three consecutive nights beginning Sept. 12 at 10 p.m. EST/PST. It will also broadcast throughout Discovery Networks International’s factual and lifestyle channels in more than 220 territories this fall.
“As television’s home for true-crime programming, Investigation Discovery is uniquely suited to take an objective, in-depth look at this investigation from beginning to end,” Deutsch tells realscreen. “What really distinguishes JonBenét: An American Murder Mystery is access: from exclusive crime scene footage shot inside the house the day the body was found to investigators with the DA’s office speaking candidly for the first time.
“Our series offers viewers a 360-degree look at this tragic and controversial investigation, ultimately begging the question – will there ever be justice for JonBenét?”
