French producer-distributor Groupe AB has signed celebrated Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan Cesar Millan to star in its first English-language series for the global television market, in collaboration with Televisa USA.
The series, entitled The Messenger, is based on a French version of the same name which premiered in January as a series of two-hour primetime specials on France 3 and AB3 in Belgium.
The English format will feature Millan as he looks to help people rescue and rehabilitate some of the most critically endangered animals on the planet. In each episode, Millan will venture to various natural habitats, putting the spotlight on conservationists and the risky work they perform daily.
The series is produced by wildlife specialists AB Productions and Boréales, which also produced the French series. Millan, Chris Philip, Frederic Fougea, Richard Maroko and Bob Aniello are on board the project as executive producers.
Groupe AB is expected to launch worldwide pre-sales for the 6 x 60-minute series at MIPCOM later this month.
The move into English-language programming comes as Groupe AB eyes a major expansion into the U.S. and global English-language markets.
Richard Maroko, senior EVP programs for Groupe AB, said all that was needed was “the right project and star to come along.”
Millan, who carved a name for himself in the U.S. and abroad as a dog-behavior expert in reality hits such as Cesar 911, Leader of the Pack and the Dog Whisperer, said The Messenger is a natural extension of that work.
“Animals have rights too and we need to respect their natural place in our world,” he said in a statement.
WME brokered the deal on behalf of Millan.
