Discovery Communications has hired ProSiebenSat.1 Media exec Gunnar Wiedenfels as chief financial officer as the media company looks to diversify into new content and digital platforms around the world.

Effective on or about April 1, Wiedenfels will replace Andrew Warren who previously announced he would leave the company at the year’s end. He will now extend his contract to ensure a smooth transition of his responsibilities.

Wiedenfels has spent seven years at German media company ProSiebenSat.1 Media, which operates commercial and pay-TV channels, radio and print businesses. He became CFO last year and prior to that served as deputy CFO and chief group controller. He has also worked as a management consultant and engagement manager at McKinsey & Company.

At Discovery, he will head up global financial functions and strategies and direct all accounting, treasury, budgeting, tax and investor relations activities. He will also serve on the Discovery Channel and TLC owner’s executive team and contribute to the overall strategic vision.

Wiedenfels will be based in New York and report to president and CEO David Zaslav.
