The Nonfiction Producers Association (NPA) has feted Naked and Afraid producer and Renegade 83 CEO David Garfinkle with the Above and Beyond award.

The award honors Garfinkle (pictured, left) as a founding member of the organization – one whose presence and support has helped recruit other NPA members – as well as someone who has generously donated his personal time, money and expertise to further the reach and mission of the group.

Bunim/Murray Productions founder Jonathan Murray, the first recipient of the award in 2016, presented the honor to Garfinkle on Monday, Jan. 23.

Garfinkle launched Renegade 83 in 1994 with producing partner Jay Renfroe. The company has been behind such hit unscripted series as Naked & Afraid, Naked and Afraid: XL, Fit to Fat to Fit, The Kennedy Detail and Blind Date. Entertainment One acquired a majority stake in Renegade 83 in 2016, with co-presidents and co-founders Garfinkle and Renfroe continuing to lead the California-based prodco.

Founded in 2014, the NPA represents 45 non-fiction content production companies across the U.S. and Canada, offering information and assistance to prodcos and promoting best practices of the industry.

“It is truly gratifying to connect with those who should be your competitors in this business – but who really are friends, colleagues and confidantes – and build a coalition of creative producers who also run businesses,” said Garfinkle in a statement. “All of us have to navigate the waters of an evolving industry, and the NPA has been a fantastic resource for those of us in the unscripted world. I’m honored to receive this award from my peers and I look forward to being a part of the NPA’s continued growth and influence.”

“The NPA may be a young organization but its members are so passionate about what they do and sharing what they know. David has been an amazing cheerleader for the NPA and this award is incredibly well deserved,” added Ford.
