Content Media Corporation and CNN Films have acquired content rights to Tim Golden and Ross McDonnell’s documentary Elián, exec produced by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney.

CNN Films has acquired television broadcast and CNN-branded authenticated television exhibition rights in the U.S. and Canada, while Content Media Corporation now has international sales rights to the film.

The doc follows the story of five-year-old Elián Gonzalez, a Cuban boy plucked from the Florida Straits, and how the fight for his future changed the course of U.S.-Cuba relations. The film features personal testimony, interviews and a news archive, all used to recount Elián’s rescue on Thanksgiving Day in November 1999, after his mother and 10 others perished at sea while fleeing Cuba. It also covers the custody battle between Elián’s Cuban father and his Miami-based relatives.

Elián tackles the complicated relations between Cuba and the U.S. It’s a story of family and the challenges of reconciliation.

The film was produced by Trevor Birney through his Fine Points Films banner. Amy Entelis, EVP for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide, is an executive producer on the doc and Courtney Sexton, VP for CNN Films, is supervising producer.

The deal between CNN Films and Fine Point Films was negotiated by Stacey Wolf, VP for business affairs for CNN.

CMC’s president of film Jamie Carmichael and EVP for sales and distribution Jonathan Ford will introduce Elián to distributors at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin next week. It’s slated for theatrical release later this year.
