Sheffield Doc/Fest is partnering with The European Film Market to present one of the ‘Meet the Docs’ conversations at their 2017 festival.
The panel “How to walk in someone else’s shoes: Virtual Reality – Empathy, Embodiment and Experience” will be led by Dan Tucker, alternate realities, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Darren Emerson, producer and director of the virtual reality docs Witness 360: 7/7 and Indefinite, the first ever VR commission at Sheffield Doc/Fest in 2016, Tilman Scheel, managing director, Reelport, and Liz Rosenthal, CEO of Power to the Pixel.
The ‘Meet the Docs’ event provides international VR practitioners with the chance to hear from leading VR producers, creators and exhibitors on the power of VR to trigger emotional experiences and gain insight into their creative process.
Creators and producers will also have the chance to learn more about the Doc/Fest’s forthcoming VR and interactive commission, in partnership with Liverpool’s media arts center FACT. Worth £10K — up from £5K in 2016 — the winning commission will receive its world premiere at this year’s Sheffield festival, scheduled to take place June 9-14.
The previous year’s winning project, Indefinite by Emerson, has been featured by The New York Times Op-Docs and selected for festivals in Melbourne, Sydney and Dubai.
This new partnership between the two festivals will see EFM attend Doc/Fest in June 2017.
“I am thrilled about the new partnership with our friends at the European Film Market, which further strengthens Doc/Fest’s inspiring relationships with the European and global film and VR communities. I firmly believe that we, as festivals, best serve the needs of filmmakers, creators and other industry stakeholders by working together throughout the year, and I look forward to welcoming the EFM to Sheffield in June,” said Elizabeth McIntyre, CEO, festival director, Sheffield Doc/Fest.
