Endemol Shine Group-owned Initial has appointed Darren Smith to the newly created role of head of entertainment.

He will develop and produce an original roster of entertainment programming. Smith will report to Initial’s managing director Mirella Breda and work with Catherine Lynch, creative director, to expand the company’s entertainment slate.

Smith has held various senior industry roles during his career including two years as the head of comedy entertainment at UK media company Twofour where he executive produced ITV’s Splash. He also spent four years at Channel 4 as commissioning editor for entertainment and comedy where he prepped 10 O’Clock Live and Friday Night Dinner.

He also co-developed and produced the first series of 8 out of 10 Cats for the television and online prodco Zeppotron — part of Endemol Shine UK – which is now in its sixteenth series for C4.

Initial is behind shows such as Big Brother and its spin-off Big Brother’s Bit on the Side which will return to Channel 5 this summer.
