BBC1 has unveiled a new two-part series to be hosted by 2015 The Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain.

Produced by Top Hat TV, The Hajj follows Hussain as she follows one of the world’s largest pilgrimages, the Hajj.

Every year, millions of Muslims descend on Mecca to make the pilgrimage. Any Muslim, if they are physically and financially able, are expected to make the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

Hussain completed the Hajj in 2013, and this new series will follow her from her prep in England to her arrival in the exclusively Muslim city of Mecca. After the five days of the pilgrimage, she will go to Median to visit the Prophet’s Mosque and Muhammad’s tomb.

Hussain will show audiences all that comes with the Hajj, including the heat, the food, the dehydration, and the humor, and will meet with other pilgrims to hear their stories.

“I’m delighted that Nadiya has agreed to be the BBC1′s guide to this amazing spectacle,” said Tom McDonald, head of commissioning, natural history and specialist factual, in a statement. “She’ll be right in the heart of the Hajj in what promises to be an emotional and uplifting journey.”

The Hajj (w/t) was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, director, BBC Content and Tom McDonald. It is being made by Top Hat TV with executive producer Darren Kemp.
