EW Scripps and Katz finalize broadcast deal

Atlanta-based media company E.W. Scripps Company has closed its acquisition of the Katz broadcast networks, which include Laff, Grit, Bounce and Escape.

The deal, which was initially announced in August 2017, has been approved by regulators. The price tag of the sale was US$302 million, but because Scripps is a five per cent owner of the business, its net purchase price was US$292 million.

According to a press release, the four networks – which reach more than 80% of the U.S. households – are forecasted to generate about US$180 million in revenue in 2018.

Former Turner Broadcasting programming exec Jonathan Katz founded the company and will continue to lead the Katz networks business. The company, including 130 employees, will remain based in the Atlanta area.
