American broadcaster Fox has commissioned Los Angeles-based producer Smart Dog Media to develop shiny floor entertainment format The Masked Singer, realscreen has confirmed.

The studio-based entertainment competition will feature celebrity contestants – from actors to musicians to comedians – donning elaborate masks and costumes to conceal their identity as they face off in head-to-head singing battles.

In the first round, both contestants are given the same song to sing. In the second and third rounds, the contestants will each choose a solo song to sing.

Through instant live votes, both a panel of judges and viewers determine the winner, and only after being eliminated are their true identities revealed as they are unmasked on stage.

The series was adopted from the South Korean format Mystery Music Show: King of Mask Singer (pictured), which was originally created by MBC Entertainment. The series launched February 2015 on MBC in South Korea.

FOX’s greenlight follows international successes for the format having recently aired in such Asian nations as China in Mandarin, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
